The Gut-Eye Axis: Promising Research, Not a Product Proof

The “gut-eye axis” describes proposed biological links between the intestinal microbiome, immune and metabolic signaling, and ocular health. It is an active research field, not proof that a particular gut-targeted supplement improves eyesight.

What researchers are finding

Recent reviews report associations between gut dysbiosis and several ocular disorders and discuss immune, barrier and metabolite pathways that could connect the gut and eye.

The major limitation

Clinical intervention evidence remains limited. Earlier systematic review work found relatively few interventional studies, with small samples and heterogeneous designs. Association and biological plausibility are not the same as demonstrated treatment efficacy.

Why this matters when evaluating supplements

A product may reference the gut-eye axis in its marketing. The correct next question is whether the finished product has clinical evidence for its claimed outcome. See how we apply that distinction in our VisiFlora review.
